Yes - from an instructional perspective, GrammarFlip can be used independently from the classroom.  Students have access to instructional video lessons, practice exercises with instant feedback, writing application activities, and review games (via Kahoot) that can be accessed away from school and without teacher guidance.

While video lessons, practice exercises, and review games are self-guided and self-assessing, writing application activities require teacher feedback.  In other words, student writing is not assessed by GrammarFlip - we provide the instructional prompts and the portals in which the students and teacher may interact.

Student writing can be evaluated by the teacher asynchronously (once students submit their writing in GrammarFlip, the teacher has access to it at any time); however, we feel the most value can be gained when student writing can be completed and evaluated in a real-time (synchronous) classroom environment, if possible.  Research studies indicate that when teachers have the ability to monitor student writing in progress, students have higher retention levels due to the immediate feedback.

Using the writing portals in real time allows teachers to work more effectively (by discovering and reaching struggling students sooner) as well as efficiently (by discovering successful students and moving them forward in the platform).
